we have been told that we would need to but light bulbs at $ 15 each and the fridges so on are four times the cost,we live remote and power lines are over a mile away and have to be brought in underground which is why we though solar/wind power would be a good option

you haven’t give the details so i am making some assumptions here…………

Maybe the person is telling you to get stuff that runs on DC supply cause solar panels and wind turbines produce DC supply and the batteries also work on DC……………..apart from the cost you can not get every thing that works on DC…………..

Best way out is to get a heavy duty Inverter (device to convert DC into AC)……..this way you can have your solar and wind and battery backup but you can use the normal appliances that you buy for your home…………
