Would you like to get your electricity from a clean energy source? Are you concerned about the rising costs of electricity due to our country’s dependence on limited resources? If so, then you may be interested in learning how to solar power your house. Unfortunately, solar energy systems can be very expensive.
The good news is that you can learn how to build them yourself out of scratch! It doesn’t cost very much money if you obtain the parts on eBay or your local hardware store. All you need is a good DIY guide that explains everything in a simple manner.
Before you get started, here are some things you need to know about solar power systems.
You’ll need some solar cells for your project. You can either build these from scratch or buy them. They can be very difficult to make, so fortunately they can be obtained at a low price. You can find solar cells on eBay or Craigslist for sale. The cell is only one component in a solar panel system, so you can still build the rest of it from scratch.
You’ll also need a power inverter, charge controller, and batteries. The charge controller prevents overcharging, and the inverter converts 12 DC volts into 120 AC volts, which will be needed to power your home. Extra energy will be stored in the batteries so that you’ll have electricity at night and on cloudy days. As you build the system, you need to cover the solar panels up with cardboard to prevent them from being activated before you’re ready.
You might need a permit to install the system once it’s complete. Consult your local zoning department to find out what you need to do for permission to install your solar panels. They might want proof that your roof will be able to withstand the panels and that all of the wiring is safe.
Learn the difference between “grid-tied” and “off the grid”. Grid-tie means you’re still connected to the utility company. Off the grid means you’re 100% self sufficient. It can be a very liberating experience living off the grid, but you might have to make sacrifices in order to get there. Starting out, you should hook your solar panels into the grid and still rely on the power company somewhat. You never know when something might happen to cause damage to your solar panels. You’ll still receive an electric bill every month, but the cost will be a lot lower than what you’re paying now.
There are different types of installation: ground mounted, roof mounted, static mounted, active solar tracker, and passive solar tracker. Solar trackers are the most efficient, but they can be very costly. Most residential solar panel owners choose the static mounted method. This involves setting up your solar panels wherever you think they will receive the most amount of sunlight, and hope for the best. Chances are, this spot will be on your roof, although you’ll have to drill some holes in your roof for installation.
These guidelines are really just the beginning. You can get the COMPLETE, step by step solar blueprint for saving THOUSANDS of dollars (yep, thousands.) every single year on your energy bills with your own homemade solar panel system.
