Below are several of the different types of solar panels available today.

1. Amorphous Solar Panel: Are made up of a really thin film like material made from molten silicon which is spread across large plates of stainless steel or very similar materials. This type typically have a lower efficiency then the other two types of panels, and least expensive to produce. One advantage of this panels over the other next two is that it’s shadow protected. Shadow protected meaning that the panel continues to charge while part of the cells are in the shadow. These work very well on boats and similar types of transportation.

2. Polycrystalline Solar Panel: On the other hand, are the more common type of panels used on the market. The cell in this solar panel look very similar to shattered crystal. These are slightly less efficient than the more expensive monocrystalline solar panels and cost is considerably less to produce. Instead of one large crystal, these consists of multiple amounts of the much smaller silicon crystals.

3. Monocrystalline Solar Panels: Are the biggest consisting of three larger crystals and, the most efficient as in absorbing sunlight and converting it into electricity. Thus, making them the most costly cells to produce. They perform better in all light conditions then the other types mentioned above.

Solar Cell Efficiency:

Below are the Approximate Percentages for each type of Solar Panel:

* Monocrystalline- 18%
* Amorphous (thin-film)-10%
* Polycrystalline- 15%

All three types of panels have both advantages and disadvantages depending on the end user’s budget, the size and type of environment where they are used and the expected output of the system to name a few. Any of the three solar cell mention will work it just depends on what panel is tailored to your needs.

Before Purchasing, It’s best to check out the efficiency of the unit which will be printed along the outer side of the box and this will give you an good idea of which one to buy.
