I am trying to think of something to power using solar photovoltaics for a science fair project. It must be under 5 V. Any ideas??

A red LED (1.8V @ 20 mA) will be the easiest thing to power and demonstrate in subdued lighting. Without bright light or direct sun light the PV cell will only generate a fraction of its rated power. Forget about powering a motor unless you plan on using about 18 sq inches of PV Cells in bright sun light. You might have some luck with a Solar Demo kit that uses a special motor but be prepared to shine a bright light on it to get it to work inside.
