There are two sorts of solar plants.

The first is Photo Voltatic, which sunlight directly excites the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material, creating an electrical current, which is converted to utiltiy AC levels to feed the grid.

The second is Solar Thermal, where various means collect the heat generated by the sun, for distribution to homes an business for heat, or used to make steam to run a turbine and generator, or a Stirling engine and generator.
