Whether you have recently purchased a new home or are making new arrangements to your home solar panels are a great thing to consider. Not only do solar panels add value to your home but they also give other great features to your home and building them is not as hard as it may seem!
Building home solar panel is easy as there are a lot of how-to books, do-it-yourself modules, video tutorials and websites that can guide you through this if you need extra help. Materials are not that hard to find as well because you can purchase them in home improvement stores at a very low price.
The main thing that you will need when making a water heating panel is a flat plate collector or the photovoltaic solar panel itself. Several tools such as a hacksaw, wood saw, hammer, screwdriver, nails, screws, paintbrush, file and a tape measure is also required. These, however, are not the only materials that are needed. You will also need a 10mm annealed copper tube, 16 swg aluminum sheet, timber for making a frame, glass fiber wool, 4mm glass and a marine-ply sheet. Solar water heating panels are designed considering 3 factors, efficiency, cost and durability. Copper tubing is recommended as it does not corrode in oxygenated water. It will not corrode in ethylene and glycol mixtures either as long as a suitable inhibitor is used. This type of tubing is soft and easy to work with especially when you want to shape it. Copper tubing will then be attached into a blackened absorber plate that will collect the suns’ solar energy and transfer it into copper tubing filled with water. Aluminum or copper should be used to achieve great results, but in this case, aluminum is highly recommended. A 16 swg thickness should be enough because thinner gauges have a tendency of warping under intense heat conditions while thicker gauges might reduce the efficiency of your thermal panel. To lessen the risk of galvanic corrosion, your absorber plate should be painted with black paint and primer, and so is the copper tube. A wooden tray will be used to house your absorber place. This is made of a hardwood frame with a marine-ply backing sheet. You should also apply preservative coating to ensure minimum maintenance during its exposure to the suns’ direct and intense heat.
Once you have purchased all of your materials the actual building part is the fun part! If you do not feel comfortable finding written instructions there are tons of websites that offer video how to tutorials as well as pictorials that you can use to your benefit. When you feel discouraged or frustrated remember that by doing this you are paving the way to a greener earth and you are setting the example to those around you. If making a greener earth is not enough to convince you then you should consider all of the money you will save on your electric bills every month!
